The men's Rolex Cosmograph, model ‘Daytona’, might just be the most sought after Rolex. Rolex began production of their chronograph watches in 1937, with a Valjoux movement. In the late 1980s, Rolex began using Zenith movements in the Daytona’s, and early Daytona’s were linked to big names, such as Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. This particular watch has the Zenith movement; however, shortly after the production of this watch Rolex started making their own chronograph movements. The term Chronograph refers to its function to drive separate timing features, while still maintaining the correct time. The Rolex Daytona Cosmograph has 3 small registers on the dial. The full size sweep second hand makes a one minute sweep, therefore keeping track of seconds. The register located at the 3 o’clock position is the ’30 minute’ register, which keeps track of each revolution the full size sweep second hand makes, up to 30 revolutions, or 30 minutes. The register at the 6 o’clock position, called the ‘hour lapse’ register, keeps track of each revolution of the ’30 minute’ register; therefore, each revolution of the ’30 minute’ register would result in the ‘hour lapse’ register recording a 1/2 mark, up to 12 hours. Lastly, the register at the 9 o’clock position is in constant motion, as it is the second hand. The full size sweep is only in motion when the wearer is using the timing functions.
This Rolex Daytona Cosmograph watch is all 18kt yellow gold in its entirety. The band is an oyster solid core, with the ‘new style short’ flip lock buckle. The bezel is a standard Rolex Daytona ‘Speed Ring’ with engraving, and when used properly at the Daytona Speedway, will track the average speed of a car on the track in miles per/hour. This watch has an original Rolex dial in Satin white, with gold stick figures and stick hands, as well as gold rings for each of the registers, and lastly, the Daytona name, over the 6 o’clock position is in red ink. The full name, printed beneath the 12 o’clock, in black, says Rolex Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified Cosmograph. The case serial number is A459579, which is used to date the watch as 2000. The case reference is 16528. The movement serial number is 187414 and the movement reference number is 4030. This movement, again manufactured by Zenith, contains 31 jewels and was recently serviced, and in wonderful, like-new, condition.
Although this Rolex may vary from some of their more common models, this Rolex Daytona is still automatically wound and fully shock proof. Further, the crown and both pushers are threaded down in order to make it fully water, and dive, proof.
Rolex Daytona’s are extremely recognizable, making it one of the more sought after Rolex models. Since, this watch, as with most Rolexes, is shock proof and fully water tight, it is a perfect watch for sports use, or to take to the track and time your favorite driver.
